Turn Washington's Spies Series Review
A great historical drama that everyone should watch
Turn Washington's Spies is a fantastic historical drama show that I have loved from episode one. The characters are great and the history is so interesting.
The show starts at the beginning of the American Revolution, and it follows the life of Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell) during the war. Abe is a cabbage farmer that is down on his luck, and he resorts to the black market to sell his lot, there he runs into an old friend Caleb Brewster (Daniel Henshall), they trade, and on his way back Abe is captured by the Patriots. When he's being interrogated an old friend from his home town comes forth, Benjamin Tallmadge (Seth Numrich). Ben is an officer in the Continental Army, and recruits Abe as a spy. Abe returns home and enlists the help of his friend Anna Strong (Heather Lind) to act as the signal for their courier, who just so happens to be Caleb Brewster. Now acting as a spy, Abe must keep this secret from his wife, Mary (Meegan Warner), his tory father, Judge Richard Woodhull (Kevin McNally), and the British Major in charge of his town Major Hewlett (Burn Gorman), and his greatest adversary, Capitan John Simcoe (Samuel Roukin).I mean this in the absolute best sense of the word, Turn Washington's Spies is a great show. The acting is fantastic, the historical elements are beautiful, and just the overall feel was spectacular!
Jamie Bell is a great actor, and everyone else in the show does a fantastic job as well. I don't think there was a truly bad performance in the entire show, granted maybe some minor characters, but the main cast does an excellent job overall. I hope to see the actors in more historical films, because if they were as good as they were in this show, then you would be in for a real treat.
The history of the culper spy ring is an interesting one, and I did read a fantastic book on the spy ring once. I might make a review for the book someday, but anyways, back to talking about the show. They do take some creative liberties with the history of the show, and it's expected that they would, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience. I think that this is one of those shows that does a good job of roping you in and makes you want to delve deeper into the real ring. Yes there are historical inaccuracies, but they are to be forgiven because of how good the show is overall.
One thing that really gets to me is how the show ends, and I won't give away the spoilers, but I just want to say it's good. You know how some shows just have really bad endings and it just ruins the experience? This show doesn't have a bad ending. I'm perfectly happy with how they ended Turn Washington's Spies. I will not lie, I wish the show continued to five or six seasons, but I'm happy with the four seasons that we ended up with.
If you enjoy historical dramas, or anything about American history, or the Revolution in and of itself, or heck, even if you just like a good show, then Turn Washington's Spies is a must watch. I have watched the entire series twice now, and I plan to watch it again sometime in the future. If anyone asked me to recommend a good show for them, then Turn Washington's Spies would be near the top of my list. I miss the characters each time the show ended, and I will be happy to revise them agin. My only regret is that I have only watched the twice.
final score: 4.7/5
