Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale Review
A pretty good addition to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but could be better
As promised I am here to review The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale. If you have not seen my review for Season 1 of the show, I recommend reading it first. I'm going to keep things a bit brief in this post.
So, the episode starts off with a flashback to the previous year as Sabrina and her friend are going to see Santa. Then it jumps ahead to the present day once again. So, the witches don't celebrate Christmas, but the celebrate the Winter Solstice, and Sabrina decides to hold a seance to attempt to contact her dead mother, and then things slightly go wrong. Ghost children end up plaguing their house, and Susie is captured by a demon. Can Sabrina and family save her, and their house? Find out in this episode of, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina!
Alright, this episode feels a bit rushed, and the plot does hold as much weight as it did during Season 1. I think they could have taken their time with this a bit more, and maybe pushed the release date back another week to give themselves more time to work on the script and make sure the episode is solid.
It's not bad, but it's not their best. Granted this episode is supposed to be a placeholder until Season 2 comes out. Apparently Season 2 is coming out early next year, which kinda makes me nervous that the show will drop in quality, and they're not giving themselves enough time, but hey, I could be wrong.
Anyways, back to the episode, I think they added some interesting lore to the series, but it doesn't make sense that Sabrina is always questioning what stuff is in the witch world, because she was raised in it. I think they could have done a better explanation if they had one of her friends asking about their traditions, but this is more of a minor nitpick.
I think the Susie plot line should have been the main focus for the episode. It was interesting and they could have made it a holiday mystery. The main plot should have been the subplot, though I would have still kept the fact that Sabrina did try to contact her mom.
That brings me to the seance, and it was an interesting idea, but there are better seance scenes out there. I know this seance was supposed to be happy, but it turned more dark, and I really think another show, Penny Dreadful, had a better seance scene. I still liked where they wanted to go with the scene, I just didn't feel the emotional impact that it wanted me to feel.
It's not a bad episode, but it's not great. There were a ton of improvements they could have made, but in the end, it's still watchable. I just hope that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina picks it up again in Season 2.
final score: 2.9/5
