Bumblebee Movie Review
It was cheesy, it was 80's, and I loved every minute of it!
I just got back from seeing the new Transformers movie, Bumblebee, and it was way better than I ever thought it would be!
Bumblebee opens to the fall of Cybertron, and Optimus Prime, and Bumblebee are fighting the Decepticons. There home world dies, and Bumblebee is sent to Earth to protect the planet and prepare for a base for the Autobots. Through a fight with a Decepticon that found him, he loses his voice and memory, but he is able to kill his adversary. A young 18 year old girl named Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) eventually finds and repairs him. They bond and try to help each other, Bumblebee befriends Charlie, and Charlie helps him discover who he is, but trouble comes when the Decepticons find Bumblebee.
Alright I went into this movie not expecting much, just a mindless action film. In some ways the film is a bit mindless, but it's so fun, and the movie has a ton, and I mean a ton of heart. The acting was great, and this was way better than anything Michael Bay did with the series.
I loved the acting in this film, and Hailee Steinfeld gave one of my favorite performances of hers. If you don't remember who she is, she was the girl in the 2010 version of True Grit and she was also in The Edge Of Seventeen. I'm not a fan of her music career, but she is a fantastic actress, and I look forward every time a new movie of hers comes out.
The director for Bumblebee is Travis Knight, and I didn't really remember him, but then I looked him up and turns out he my favorite stop motion film, Kubo and the Two Strings. Travis Knight did a fantastic job with this film and I applaud him greatly for it!
There are so many 80's references in this film, granted it takes place in 1987, but still the references are fun. I also loved the heart this film has, and it's just so touching in some moments, because the connection of Bumblebee and Charlie is believable and strong. I genuinely love these characters, and I'm sorry for not mentioning the side characters, but I just want to give them credit for a second, because they did pretty darn good as well. I'm going to name drop two side characters, the first is Memo, played by Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and the second is Agent Burns, played by John Cena. Good job guys!
I had such a fun time watching this film with my friends, and this is a movie I'm seriously considering buying. The jokes are spot on in the film, and like I said, this film has heart, sure it's not the best film, but Bumblebee will leave you with a smile.
final score: 4.5/5
