So a little while ago I saw the movie, The Witch on amazon, and I thought that it was a pretty good movie.
The movie takes place in the 1600's where a Puritan family has be banished from the community, and now this family must venture out into the wilderness, making their own home and try to survive all while a witch may be reeking havoc amongst them.
This movie is written and directed by, Robert Eggers. I could be wrong but I believe that this was his very first film. I thought after seeing the movie that he did do a good job.
This movie was shot in 1.66:1 aspect ratio which is a nice aesthetic. In some ways it does have an arthouse feel to it, but it's not overbearing.
The films musical score adds another layer to the story that gives it a creepy vibe, and a sense of uneasiness that follows and builds the tension every time that it is played. It is loud, and rightly so, because it shows the sense of dread that creeps up on this film.
Anya Taylor-Joy gives a fantastic performance in this movie, and I applaud her for it, as she brings her character to full believable life. The rest of the cast does a fantastic job as well, though the younger twins in the movie are a little annoying at times, and I think this was done on purpose which makes sense given the context of this film.
This is a good movie that has a few layers to it. I know that I didn't give a full analysis of this movie, but more of a brief one. I might do a full analysis in the future at some point. This is a movie that has scary tension, though not completely scary in and of itself. I do recommend watching this movie, as it is good. I'm thinking of buying it maybe come around October, and I might do an analysis then, but in the mean time, I recommend that you watch this movie.
final score: 4/5
