So I just finished reading the epic poem, Beowulf, and holy crap was that so freaking good!!! I'm usually not one for poetry, but damn! This poem has so much action and adventure it demands you attention.
So this poem takes places a long time ago in a world far far away, in Northern Europe. So the Dane people build a great mead hall so they can basically party. There partying has annoyed a monster named Grendel. So, Grendel does the absolute most logical thing ever and decides to eat and kill many people in the mead hall while they are sleeping, so he won't have to hear them party anymore. So after a time of this continuing to happen, a group of Geats decided to come and help the Danes led none other by our hero Beowulf. Beowulf is just an all around cool guy. He slays monsters, he's super-duper strong, and his honor is so far off the charts you can't help but to just be impressed by just meeting this man. So Beowulf and his men make it to the hall of King Hrothgar (so that's where Skyrim got the name) who is King of the Danes, and Beowulf offers to help fight this terrible monster that can tare men limb from limb bare handed. Beowulf vows to fight Grendel in the most honorable way he knows how, by fighting this man eating monster with no weapons or armor, just freaking bare handed... freaking... bare... handed!!! I won't spoil the rest of the story for you but this is a must read!
All in all this really is a short epic poem, I think it's only around 100 pages or so. I also believe that this is one of J.R.R. Tolkien's favorite stories, and I can see why. I can also see which parts of the story he drew inspiration from.
I believe this is one of the oldest stories that we have in written English, and if you've read my post about why I don't like Shakespeare, then you'll understand when I say that this poem puts to shame the stories of Shakespeare in my opinion.
Most copies of this story are pretty cheap, I believe, and if you get the chance you really should read this epic! I know I will reread this epic poem again, and I'm really not that into poetry. Honestly, I think this might be my favorite poem now.
Granted there are a few minor problems with the story, it's not perfect, but those can be overlooked, and don't detract from the overall experience that is Beowulf.
final score: 4/5
