Hobbs & Shaw Movie Review
A Fun Summer Action Flick
I went and saw Hobbs & Shaw over the weekend with a buddy of mine, and it was exactly as you'd expect from this film.
From The Fast & The Furious franchise, comes Hobbs & Shaw, two unlikely people team up to save the world from a deadly engineered virus.
If you've been watching The Fast & The Furious, you know what you're getting into in this film. It's not going to win any Oscars. But if you're looking to go and watch a big budget action flick this August, then Hobbs & Shaw is probably the movie for you.
Dwayne Johnson, and Jason Statham, both did a fine job. They seemed comfortable in their roles, and looked as if they were having loads of fun. They know their characters, they know this series, like I said, you get what you think you are going to. Now, what I didn't expect were the cameos. There are a couple of surprise cameos in Hobbs & Shaw, and they are very well placed.
For a spinoff of The Fast & The Furious franchise, there are very few cars they show off. There is a really freaking cool motorcycle in the film, but that's about it. I would have loved if they put a little more focus on the cars.
The locations were fun and interesting. I like how they travel around the world and each location feels different and not just the same bland grey tones. So good on them for that.
I did catch a goof in the final fight of the film. It's not really a spoiler, so I'm going to tell you. At the beginning of the final fight, Hobbes is wearing one very specific style of clothing, and it's. very specific. Then about half way through, he switches to a completely different style. If you go and see the film, let me know in the comments if you catch it too.
The film can be a little campy, but like I said, you kinda know that going into Hobbs & Shaw. They don't over emphasize it, but it's still there.
The fight scenes are pretty darn fun. Lots of action and explosions. The hand to hand combat was well choreographed, and had a very smooth flow. It was over the top at times, but for this kind of movie, it's a good thing.
Shaw didn't say many one-liners, which actually suited his character. Shaw was a bit more subtle, and I liked that. The script called for Hobbs to deliver more of the one-liners, and they didn't always land. You get a good close up and the setup is perfect for a one-liner, but Dwayne Johnson's delivery of the one-liners falls flat half the time. Hobbs and Shaw were both fun characters, but there is still room for improvement.
If you're a fan of The Fast & The Furious franchise, go and see, Hobbs & Shaw. If you're looking to see a turn your mind off action flick, go and see, Hobbs & Shaw. If you have nothing else to do and you're bored, go and see, Hobbs & Shaw.
final score: 3/5
