What is Film?

This is the most basic question you can ask someone that is involved in this art; What is film? We should start with the bare bones and give a definition of film, so I will define film as; an art that combines light, motion, and sound to portray a recorded story. In it's essence that is the basics of what a film is but there are many elements to what a film is which I listed as light, motion, and sound. Lets go through each of them to show how this adds to the making of a film. Starting with light. Light sets the tone of the film, in a way it can be one of the first things that can help define the film that you are about to watch. It goes without saying that if the lighting is darker you are going to see a darker film, if it's lighter then you'll see a lighter film. Though this can be switched up to help create a sense of irony, or dark comedy. Light would also include the coloring of the film, which I'll go into more in a later post. Next up we have motion. Blog Update: Books, Travel, Tvshows Oh My!

I have been mostly doing movie posts on here, and I do want to expand my content a little so I will soon be including book reviews, tvshow reviews, and sharing some of my travels. I will continue to mostly stay with movies though, but every once and awhile I will be posting some stuff other than film. With traveling I'm going to go on a couple of trips next year, so I won't be sharing anything about travel until next year. I'll probably do 1 or 2 tvshow reviews before October this year starts, if there's a specific show that you would like reviewed please leave a comment, and I might check it out! I'm reading Dracula (the original book) right now, so when I finish that you can expect a review of that book! I have a couple other books I have in mind to review but that will becoming later! But like I said this blog will mostly still be about film, I just want to make a couple of different posts to change things up every so often!

What's up with all the movie remakes?

I think most of us have noticed that there seem to be many movie remakes and I'll throw in sequels that waited a long time to come out. So what's up with all the movie remakes? I think most of us think that Hollywood is running out of ideas. Which probably has some truth to it, but I also think that they are probably somewhat afraid to venture out and try some knew ideas because they don't know if it will be profitable or not, until someone takes the risk and tries something new. It's safer just to keep going through the same motions over and over again. I mean, why not? It worked in the past it should work again! But this can lead to a problem, that is called boredom. which will lead to bad reviews of the movie that was put out or if the series was popular enough then it will probably get some good reviews even though its basically retelling what has already happened in the pervious films without adding anything new or exciting. Yet if this trend continues then it co

What Should You Watch Next?

I have watched many shows, so I thought if your looking to watch something different that you might have missed you might want to watch these shows! And they all should be on Netflix but no guarantees! I will break it down by genre and do 3 shows per genre. SIT-COMS 1. Friends           If you haven't seen this one yet go and see it as soon as you can! This show follows 6 friends              that live in New York in the 90's to early 2k's, and the events that happen to them. Typically I get at least one laugh per episode, thats more than most sit-coms. 2. That '70s Show            That '70's Show takes place in Wisconsin in the 1970's following a group of friends and their parents in there adventure of growing up, from high school to college. 3. Malcolm in the Middle              This show follows Malcolm and his crazy family that always seem to get themselves easily into trouble almost like its second nature to them. This is a very entertaining sho

Dunkirk Movie Review

I just got back from Dunkirk, which I watched with a friend. I have to say that this Film has almost left me speechless, so that is why I'm writing my thoughts of this Film down. From the very start my heart was pounding, and my heart kept on pounding until the credits of this gorgeous Film. At some moments I started to tear up a bit because of how impactful this Film can make you feel. From the very start you are thrown in to the Events of Dunkirk. This Film is not about following a specific character arch from start to finish, no, it is about an event and what happened to the people in that event. Each and every actor gave their best in this Film, from what I saw. They really became the characters that they were portraying. The music score was produced by Hans Zimmer. It is a masterpiece of sound that fills the ears with the tension of the scenes and the anticipation of what is happening and what is to become of the men at Dunkirk. Writer and Director Christopher Nolan did

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Movie Review

So I just saw Valerian with a friend and I have to say it was a pretty enjoyable film to watch, a fun adventure film. The comedy was great for most of the film and there were some good laughs all in all. Valerian (played by Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (played by Cara Delevingne) were well acted characters. It would be fun to watch them go on more adventures again. I would actually be fun as a tv series on a premium network, but if they make more movies I plan on watching them. The soundtrack was good but not outstanding. The opening sequence of the film was very well done showing the progress of people into the future of diplomacy. The design of the aliens was pretty interesting. The animation was truly spectacular, and the animators should be nominated for some awards. The relationship of Valerian and Laureline did not always seem natural but they made a good pair overall. So for the most part it was a pretty good film, and it does have rewatch value that is greatly appreciated

Wish Upon Movie Review

So last night with a couple of friends I went and saw the film Wish Upon. And going into it I thought it was going to be a 2/5 movie but I was wrong! It did a lot better than I thought it would. So I'm pretty happy about that. The movie stars Joey King playing Claire who one day receives a wishing box that grants 7 wishes but each time you make a wish someone dies. A simple plot but done effectively. Claire's friends June (Shannon Purser) and Meredith (Sydney Park) provide excellent comic relief to the film. When I was watching it, I couldn't help but feel that I've seen the actress Joey King in some other film before... and by golly I was right! She was in The Conjuring! One of the flaws of the film is that Claire does make some dumb choices along the way but you could attribute that to the box taking ahold of her, though I think she (the writer) could have done a little better with this. I have to give congrats for the films pacing which was done nicely, and it re

War for the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

So I just got back from seeing the new film War for the Planet of the Apes. So, what are my thoughts? It's basically exodus, you will understand what I mean by this by the end of the film. Also can we give Andy Serkis a few awards for this film, also the animators for the apes? Because it is damn good editing. The music score was top notch. Very impressive the composer should get nominated for an award. There is actually very little dialogue in the film, and they do use silence very effectively, I was very impressed. There are a few problems in the film though. For example the little girl they find (the actress does a great job), she doesn't really get much character development in the film, but she does bond with the apes... off screen... for the most part. Also Woody Harrelson did just an average job in this film, I excepted more from him. When this film does come out on dvd, I would recombined buying all three films together in a combo pack, which will probably happen.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Movie Review

So I saw this film yesterday with some friends and if I could sum up this entire movie into one word, that word would probably be, PREDICTABLE! The first quarter of this movie was pretty good, and had some nice humor, I will admit. But after that you can pretty much guess what will happen for the entire film, and you will most likely be correct, within your guess. They should have stuck with Andrew Garfield. It really feels like they half-assed this movie, I'm not joking. Spider man homecoming follows the marvel formula to a tee! There's no mention of Uncle Ben. The actress who plays Aunt May looks to young (a minor complaint) compared to past works of her. I guessed the big "twist" at least about a half hour before it was revealed, I probably could have seen it earlier but I wasn't that interested. I didn't feel much, if any, connection to Peter Parker as a character in this movie. Some of the humor was really funny though, I have to give them props fo

Baby Driver Film Review

So a few hours ago I went and saw the film Baby Driver, with one of my friends. And it was an alright film. It did surpass my expectations going in to see it. Which I really have to say is a nice surprise to have from this film. The film stars Ansel Elgort as Baby. He remains entertaining throughout the film, and his motivation is simple. Kevin Spacey does a good job in the movie also. The soundtrack is almost like another character in the movie. It has loads of good songs which are pleasant to the ears. The color scheme is done well and it fits the overall tone that the movie is trying to present to the audience. One of the big flaws for me was Jamie Foxx's character, I'm sorry but he was just annoying in the movie. One minor flaw for me was the romance in the film. It felt a little rushed. But overall if it was on tv someday as I might be flicking through channels I would probably turn it on. final score: 3/5

Despicable Me 3 Movie Review

So I saw this movie yesterday, Despicable Me 3. And it was a little underwhelming, more so than I would have thought. Don't get me wrong there are some very funny lines in the film, and some enjoyable comedy from the minions. In some ways, now looking back on it, it felt like the studio wanted to rush the film too make a quick buck, and that's probably what happened. It isn't a bad film, it just needed more time to be worked on. final score:2.5/5
