Red Sparrow Movie Review

So a little bit ago I just saw Red Sparrow staring Jennifer Lawrence, and from what I've seen the response to this movie has been a mixed bag, but what did I think about it?
So in this espionage thriller, Dominika (Jennifer Lawrence) is a ballerina who breaks her leg and looses her job. Her uncle who works for the Russian Government in the intelligence field recruits her as a spy under the guise to help her financially and help with her mother's medical bills and doctors.
So, what did the movie get wrong that's giving it so much of a mixed reaction?
Well, I want to say that this movie probably isn't for everyone, because there are some scenes that could be seen as disturbing to some, and some might not like some of the nudity involved in the context of this film. That being said, does it work well with the plot? Yes, it does and it makes sense for what the movie is going for.
Some of the acting can be a little stale sometimes. Also some of the characters can be a little clichƩ in the way they are portrayed. I also have one small gripe with Jennifer Lawrence's accent, and that is I could hear her break her Russian accent sometimes.
Now, what did the film get right?
First off the music score was phenomenally crafted for this film and it is really engaging and captures your interest in the moment.
The color scheme of the movie is highly appropriate for the tone that the film is going for, and I applaud the filmmakers for their choices.
Another thing that I really like in this movie is that there is no comedy. Don't get me wrong, I love comedy, but every once and awhile it's nice to have a film taken more seriously when the film is having a moment and it's not broken from comic relief (I'm looking at you marvel), it really does work well overall.
For the most part I thought that Jennifer Lawrence's acting was really well done, and I applaud her for it. Do I think that this movie will be remembered as one of her best? Probably not, but I think that this movie might gain a cult following.
Another thing I like in this film is the lack of action, but when it's presented, it can be... hmm... intense in some ways. In many spy/thriller type of films we usually see grandiose fight scenes (i.e. James Bond, and Kingsman), but this film shows the quitter side of the spy films. The lurking in the shadows that can really build tension.
The ending of the film was really well done. In the manner that the film ends, it makes perfect sense, and is executed beautifully.
Would I recommend seeing this film? Yes, yes I would. Sure it's not perfect, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. I will probably buy this movie when it is released on DVD, and I think this movie will be a nice addition to my film collection.

final score: 4/5

Uncharted Movie Review

Uncharted Movie Review Not As Good As The Games I went and saw the movie Uncharted a while ago, and it was as I expected it to be. If you are a fan of the games, well... prepare for disappointment. Uncharted follows Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), a low level thief as he is recruited by Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to go on a treasure hunt. As someone who has played some of the games, but not all, I have to say that the Uncharted film is what I thought it would be. A mishmash of all four games but not committing to any of them. The acting is a bit stale, and the plot is predictable. The camera work was fine, but the music was underused. Tom Holland should not have been Nathan Drake. He lacks the charisma, the attitude, and the charm. He may have passed for a teenage Nathan Drake, but he should have only been in a few scenes. I'm not the biggest fan of Tom Holland either long time readers may know. Now, onto Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan. Mark Wahlberg is way too young to be playi...

Dora and the Lost City of Gold Movie Review

Dora and the Lost City of Gold Movie Review This Was My Dad's Idea Well... I went and saw Dora and the Lost City of Gold today with my dad, and... the film was a lot funnier than it has any right to be. Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a live action adaptation of the Dora tv show on Nickelodeon. Dora, now a teenager, is sent to the City to live with her cousin, Diego, while her parents go exploring for a lost City. When her parents go missing, Dora and her new friends go and search for her parents. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the movie wasn't half bad. There is a ton of tongue and cheek humor. There is some cringe to the Dora and the Lost City of Gold too, but remember, this is a movie made for kids. As a kids film, it does a fine job. The acting was fine, and for a kids film, everyone did alright. Isabela Moner, who played Dora, did a good job portraying the character from what I remember about the show when I was very young. What surprised...

Penny Dreadful City Of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 Review

Penny Dreadful City Of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 Review  Had To Think About This One A Bit If you haven't noticed, I'm a fan of Penny Dreadful . I did address my early thoughts on the new series a little while ago , and now that it's out, I thought I would give my thoughts on the first episode. For the description I'm going to quote IMDB , " Los Angeles, 1938. LAPD detective Tiago Vega and his partner, Lewis Michener, investigate a murder. While at City Hall, Tiago's activist brother Raul Vega battles with the fiery Councilman Charlton Townsend over the construction of California's first freeway. Meanwhile, Peter Craft, the head of the German-American Bun, meets Elsa, the mysterious mother of one of his patients. Sensing danger, Tiago's mother Maria pleads with Santa Muerte to protect her family as the rising tensions in the city threaten to explode." From what I've seen from other reviewers has been very mixed. And here's my two...
