I should start this off by saying I'm not going out and buying soundtracks to video games, but I am starting to appreciate it as the art that it is.
My musical tastes typically lean more towards rock, and I don't really care for most pop, rap, or country music, (that will be a different post) though there are some exceptions within each genre. I think rock is my favorite but I admit that it's not for everyone.
I have more recently been getting into more classical music, specifically Beethoven. The man is a freaking musical genius. Moonlight Sonata third movement, is just amazing. But when you cross this with more of a rock/metal vibe you get this, an amazing mix of genres that create wonderful music.
It's not a big secret or anything that classical music isn't that popular right now, nor will it be popular for a while again probably.
However, the classical scene is thriving in video games it appears, and I believe that the genre should embrace this! Even if you are not really into video games, just take a listen to the music that is being played for the games nowadays.
If you want to listen to a sweeping epic, that portrays heroism and inspires the mind to think of a strong benevolent hero that is here to save the day (or world) you can listen to the theme to Skyrim which really emphasizes the brass instruments and the crescendos are done with utter perfection. If you want to listen to a song that is full of haunting emotion, that conjures up mystery, then you can listen to the theme of The Last Of Us which emphasizes the strings well. You might want something a little different than I have suggested, something more dramatic, well then I have to recommend the theme to Dark Souls 3. You might want a song of wonderment, and mystery, something that brings you in and holds your attention, and for this I would recommend that you listen to the song Welcome to Rapture in the video game Bioschock. Or you might like something a little more dark, that gives off an eerie feeling, a sense of terror like you are in a horror movie on Halloween night, this can be experienced from the theme of the game Bloodborne.
I think you might start to be getting the point I'm trying to make here. Music is a very old art form, and it's classical genre has evolved into its modern form of video game music. You don't even have to like gaming to appreciate that these songs are wonderful, and that they took more talent to craft than the top hits out now. I don't know what the future holds for music, but I don't think that video game music will be cracking into the top charts, but it is finding its way into concert halls. This is why I'm starting to love video game music. Overall though I think in the future, video game music will have found its home among Beethoven, it might not happen know or over night, but I think eventually it will happen.
