Human Capital Movie Review
An Enjoyable Flick
So, a couple days ago it was my first time back at a theater since the quarantine began and I went and saw the film, Human Capital with a friend of mine.
I'm not exactly how to describe Human Capital, so, I'm going to quote the IMDB page, "The lives of two different families collide when their children begin a relationship that leads to a tragic accident."
Human Capital has a ton of actors you would recognize but may not remember their names. There is a good pace to the film and it changes things up a couple of times which was really refreshing. Human Capital is a bit more of a character study than a plot heavy film, and it works for what it is. I think you'll probably enjoy this movie a bit more knowing that going in.
Regarding the actors, I'm just going to listen their names: Marisa Tomei, Maya Hawke, Alex Wolff, Peter Sarsgaard, Liev Schreiber, Paul Sparks, Betty Gabriel. Plus many others that I'm not going to list here, but if you click on the names of the actors which I listed, I linked to their IMDB pages if they sound of look familiar. They all did a fine job in the film. I wouldn't say that there was a standout performance, but they were all enjoyable.
Like I mentioned before, Human Capital is not a plot heavy film. Which is fine in and of itself, but for being more of a character study, Human Capital surprisingly pulls it off. I don't think this film is for everyone, but if you enjoy character studies, then you'll enjoy this film.
From what I remember from watching the end credits is that this was entirely an indie style of film. The major studios weren't involved in this one it appears. In a way, it's kind of a breath of fresh air to take a break from the big name studios but at the same time it's also interesting to see big name actors attached to this film as well.
If Human Capital didn't have the cast that it had, I don't think it would have been able to pull off what it did. Possibly the real star for this one is the Casting Director. They don't always get the love they deserve, but this time, they do.
The camera work is solid and they don't take a ton of risks with their shots and it's pretty par for the course. What really shines in Human Capital is the editing. The editor also deserves some praise as there are at least a good handful of interesting edits in this film which keep things fresh.
I probably wouldn't pay a lot to see Human Capital, but I do think it's worth a watch. I do plan on seeing the film sometime again, and maybe getting it on DVD, but we'll have to see. Overall, I thought Human Capital was pretty enjoyable.
final score: 3.7/5
